St. Kilda: the ancestral home of our Soay sheep

As I watched our flock moving slowly through lush early summer pastures earlier this morning, I marveled again at how these small heritage sheep came to be here after surviving centuries of the harsh conditions and the isolation of the islands of St. Kilda that made this living remnant of an earlier age so hardy and self-reliant.

But then I remembered a short documentary, now posted online, that focuses on Soay sheep and the several other small mammals and birds who still frequent the islands of Soay and Hirta. In case you haven’t seen it, I invite you to watch this 12-minute reminder of what a treasure we Soay shepherds are privileged to own in the 21st century, half way around the world from their ancestral home.
